Georg Eisler’s topics always circled around human beings: masses of people in juxtaposition to individual persons (in the form of portraits). His approach was to watch everyday people in their day-to-day activities. He showed people in their anonymity, which emerges especially when they are in a crowd, or trapped in their isolation in scenes at coffee shops, street cars, lanes, railway platforms, underground stations, variety theaters or jazz clubs. In fact, these are documentaries taking stock of situations, almost like in a chronicle.
Eisler’s expressive and realistic style, as well as the subtle shades of his colors bring out the events shown in his paintings or graphic works, which he produces in series or which can be put together to form series. Motion vs. standstill, light vs. dark, focused vs. vague – these are the catchwords that make up and characterize the work of this artist, who died in 1998.
